DeKalb Medical Center CEO Named Chair of Leadership
DeKalb
Eric P. Norwood, president and chief executive officer of
DeKalb Medical Center, has been named chairman of Leadership DeKalb, a
non-profit organization that has for 20 years trained community leaders to
work together for positive change.
Norwood graduated Leadership DeKalb in 2004 and is in his fourth year
on
the board, having served previously as treasurer and chair-elect. He
succeeds David Campbell of Georgia Power as chair.
“Leadership DeKalb is one of the most influential forums in our community
for connecting leaders and future leaders across the full spectrum of the
public and private sectors,” said Norwood, who has spent his entire career
in health care. “As such, it is an excellent investment for any organization
desiring to make a difference in DeKalb County through adult and youth
leadership development.”
In the past two decades, Leadership DeKalb has trained more than 850
community leaders for public service, through a 10-month education program
that exposes them to a range of issues. Topics include DeKalb’s police,
justice, health and education systems; opportunities and challenges related
to the county’s ethnic and cultural diversity; and issues surrounding
business, development and social services.
Participants ride along on a shift with DeKalb police officers, observe the
county’s 911 emergency system, and listen as noted speakers shed light on
issues facing the county and region. In addition to broadening their
perspective, participants network and join small discussion groups that
often result in collaborative solutions to intractable problems.
“We are creating a tapestry,” said Sara Fountain, executive director of
Leadership DeKalb. “We are connecting people with each other so that they
can help each other in many ways.”
Leadership DeKalb graduates include law enforcement officers, legislators,
educators, religious leaders, volunteer leaders, non-profit managers, real
estate and economic developers, small business owners, community advocates,
judges, attorneys, architects, health care officials and medical staff.
Board members include Georgia Attorney General Thurbert Baker and DeKalb
County School Superintendent Crawford Lewis.
Leadership DeKalb also operates Youth Leadership DeKalb, a 10-month program
designed to develop leadership skills of high school students. Participants
learn about the county’s rich cultural and ethnic diversity, self-awareness,
teamwork, understanding others, community awareness and personal
responsibility. There are 32 10th and 11th graders in the current class.

Legacy Communities’ Sponsorship Benefits Youth
Leadership DeKalb
Legacy Communities has become the largest corporate supporter of Youth
Leadership DeKalb with its sponsorship of Leadership DeKalb’s Golf Classic
at East Lake Golf Club for the third tournament in a row.
Youth Leadership DeKalb is a program designed to develop the leadership
skills of young people in DeKalb County so they may confidently become
leaders of tomorrow. Celebrating the rich cultural and ethnic diversity of
our county, the Youth Leadership DeKalb program focuses on self awareness,
understanding others, teamwork, community awareness, responsibility and
leadership skills.
Youth Leadership DeKalb accepts about 30 high school students each year for
the 10-month program. Participants do not pay tuition and the program is
solely funded by corporate sponsors, foundations and Leadership DeKalb
members.
“This level of support from Legacy Communities is invaluable to the Youth
Leadership DeKalb program,” said Executive Director Sara Fountain. “We are
very grateful to Legacy for working with us for three tournaments in a row.”

Join Us in Honoring the Memory of Robin Nash
As many of you know, Robin Nash '95, who passed away in
January, spent his entire legal and judicial career advocating for and
assisting children and the less fortunate in our community. To honor and
continue his life's work, several community organizations have set up a
memorial fund in his name.
The Juvenile Court of DeKalb County, the DeKalb Bar Association, and
Leadership DeKalb are raising money to establish an annual college
scholarship for a deserving high school senior in foster care in DeKalb
County so that he or she can continue their education. The scholarship will
be given in honor and memory of Robin.
Also, pending approval from DeKalb County, plans are to place an engraved
bench and plant a tree in the courtyard in front of the new Juvenile Court
building once it is opened.
Donations are welcome and appreciated and may be sent to the DeKalb Bar
Association at P.O. Box 3136, Decatur, GA 30031 (payable to the Robin S.
Nash Memorial Fund).
