Pura Vida means "this is living" or "I am experiencing the best in life." This Spanish term is a greeting Costa Ricans love to use. It also aptly describes the spirit of the Literacy Project jointly sponsored by the Decatur Rotary Club and Leadership DeKalb.
This annual one-week summer outreach program offers the opportunity to work on a variety of interesting projects. The primary emphasis is to upgrade the educational system of the impoverished Guanacaste Region. Our members may help with odd jobs around the schools ranging from painting walls to talking in English to young students. In the classroom, our members may help with a map-making project that Agnes Scott Professor Barbara Tedrow developed last year for our group.
The educational project's focus is to foster reading and writing development among rural students in the area. It also increases the cultural literacy of the participants. The service project also includes working on Habitat for Humanity houses and various other projects that the Pattillo Foundation may have for us. Overall, the service mission benefits the local students, but the Leadership DeKalb and Decatur Rotary Club members who participate have a great time learning about the region, making new friends among the Costa Ricans as well as becoming friends themselves.
The daily schedule has ample time for walking on the beach, golfing, hiking, horseback riding or sightseeing. Last year's participants ventured down the coast to go to dinner in local villages and towns and a few tried the famous "canopy tours" in the tops of the rain forests. A full day is dedicated to travel in the country to visit historic sites or whatever you choose.
This service vacation is a worthwhile way to spend a week with Leadership DeKalb and Rotary friends learning new customs, helping others and generally having a great time in Costa Rica, one of the most beautiful, ecologically diverse countries in the world.
This year's trip is scheduled for July 28 - August 3, 2007.
Many thanks to Beth Vann '03, who is coordinating the 2007 trip. Leadership DeKalb Executive Director Sara Fountain will be going on the trip. If you want to contact last year's participants for their opinion, just call Robert Berg, Bettye Davis, Alicia Franck, Ann Kimbrough, Bill Mealor, Lynn Ranew, Barbara Tedrow, and Beth Vann.
Hacienda Pinilla, a 5,000-acre beachside resort owned by H.G. "Pat" Pattillo, serves as the base camp for the Costa Rica trip. Accommodations at Hacienda Panilla and some meals are provided free for the group. You pay for your flight, ground transportation and incidentals (flight is approx. $600). (The trip to and from the airport is provided for us at no cost.)
The Hacienda has several restaurants, golf courses, horseback riding, beaches and a free shuttle throughout the resort. A favorite activity last year was the sunset cruise!
